Damiana is a small flowering shrub often found in Mexico, Central America, the West Indies, and South America. In the early to late summer, small yellow blooms are followed by sweet-smelling fig-like fruits, though its historically been the long, serrated leaves that are harvested during the flowering season.
The essential oil, which is steam distilled from the leaves, flowers, and stems of the Damiana plant, has a sweet fruity and floral aroma with earthy undertones, reminiscent of sweet hay and wood. Its rich history dates back to ancient Aztec and Mayan recordings, as well as Mexican folklore, claiming the herb and extracts were used primarily as an aphrodisiac. Today this traditional use continues to be associated with this herb.
Emotionally, Damiana Essential Oil is relaxing, uplifting, and balancing. Its complex aroma and chemical makeup softly energizes while relaxing simultaneously, making it wonderful to help reduce feelings of anxiety and depression. It is also commonly used to support the digestive system because of its calming, soothing effect.
